Sounds like Oakwood resident Jonathan Mezzacappa is a bit confused about curbside composting and we are happy to clarify some important points.
Mr. Mezzacappa incorrectly states this is the first time DSNY can inspect trash bags – far from it. Composting enforcement is working the same way we’ve enforced recycling rules for decades. Mixing compost within your trash can earn you a fine just like mixing paper, glass, metal, plastic and cartons within your trash can earn you a fine.
Additionally, the end point of your food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste is no secret. Material collected as compost goes to facilities that turn it into renewable energy or finished compost.
Speaking of, Staten Island is home to one of our compost giveback sites— at the Staten Island Compost Facility — that’s been churning out compost for a long time. Residents can sign up to get free compost from the site. Go to nyc.gov/GetCompost to get your bags. All told, we produce and distribute tens of millions of pounds of compost per year.
Every resident has an easy way to avoid a fine — keep the compostable material out of your trash. We provided residents the chance to get a free brown compost bin as service began in their boroughs, and now it’s time to use them. Food scraps go in the brown bin or a sealed bin of your own; yard waste can go in the bin, a paper bag, or a clear plastic bag. It couldn’t be easier, and it’s the best way to help keep our city clean and unappealing to rats and other critters.
Now, you’ve got answers. Let’s get composting, Mr. Mezzacappa.
